Queenslands Devastating Floods

12 Jan

This post is primarily for my overseas readers and friends who may not be aware of the current situation affecting Australia , a number of days ago Queensland was  subjected to severe flooding that affected the majority of the state ,the ensuing build up of the flooding and continual downfall of rain was unprecedented in Australia’s history with the flooding reaching proportionate levels , the flooding was devastating on its own when without warning the flooding became an inland tsunami of water rising to monstrous heights , the tsunami of water raced through the main streets of the capital of Queensland , Brisbane ,this was only the beginning of a country’s nightmare , later the wall of water raced through the city of Toowoomba washing houses away and taking lives , the two major cities and numerous outlying towns are awaiting for the floods to peak which is to be approximately 20 metres late tonight or early in the morning.

The current statistics are , 12 persons dead , 67 reported missing , 90,000 thousand houses affected.Public transport has closed down in major areas , 25 helicopters are working overtime ,major evacuation centres have been set up ,the floods will have a follow on effect into New South Wales.

I will keep you informed

Here is a news report

AT LEAST 10 people are dead in the Queensland floods and there are fears that the toll will more than double. Dozens of people are still unaccounted for, including entire families. Four children are among the dead.

Fifty nine people are missing, all from the Lockyer Valley west of Brisbane and most from the tiny townships of Murphys Creek, Grantham and Withcott.

”There are the families and the loved ones of 59 Australians … who do not know where those people are, or the circumstances in which they find themselves,” the Queensland Premier, Anna Bligh, said.

”We know that we have very grave fears for 15. But with so many others outstanding and unaccounted for we still face very grim news as we continue the search and rescue activity.”

In the town of Grantham, with a population of just 360, a mother and her two children, a boy and girl, were found dead inside a car. The body of an elderly woman was found in a home in the same town.

A woman’s body was discovered washed up at neighbouring Gatton, and in Toowoomba a woman, 42, and a boy, 13, believed to be her son, were swept away as they clung to a tree on Monday afternoon.

Troy Campbell of James Street Motor Inn in Toowoomba said that the woman and two boys had been in trouble in front of his motel.

One of the boys, also believed to be her son, was rescued.

”There were some people who made their way out there and managed to get a hold of him. He had held onto the light in the middle of the intersection,” he said. ”He was out in the water with them for a good hour or so.”

The bodies of a middle-aged man and a middle-aged woman were found at Murphys Creek and the Queensland State Emergency Service said a young boy had drowned at Ipswich. Police have yet to confirm that death.

The Queensland flood toll already stood at 10 before the flash flooding. Those people died in the central Queensland floods.

In January 1974, when Cyclone Wanda dumped heavy rain on Brisbane, at least 14 people died and 300 were injured.

I saw the devastation on the News, Ian, such a terrible, terrible tragedy. So many people losing their homes, having to see their whole lives being swept away by natural disaster… No-one watching could be left untouched by the heartbreak and loss … Water, such a life giving force on the one hand, but on the other a powerful and concentrated force wielding such deathly power with no way of stopping it.
It just makes you wonder where this turnabout with Nature and the Weather patterns will end. xPenx
