Australian Bushmen

23 Sep

I’m a plain Australian bushman and I’ve drifted far and wide,
I’m a jack-of-all-trades in the bush and I say that with pride,
I’m only one of many who are batt’ling in the scrub,
Workin’ for an honest wage, may be to splash in some old pub,
For we are ringers, fencers, shearers, we are drovers on the track,
We are miners and road builders op’ning up the great outback,
Hard drinkers and hard workers and we give but never lend,
And we wander ‘cos we know our goal lies ’round the distant bend.
Our wives are mostly stickers so they sacrifice and save,
In lonely isolation, understanding, true and brave,
They rouse and scold and nurse us when we’re getting off the spree
And I wonder why such women stick to blokes like you and me,
We are precious cooks and rousers thru and brumby shooters too,
Horse breakers and truck drivers, taking pride in all we do,
Hard drinkers and hard fighters and we give but never lend,
And we wander ‘cos we know our goal lies ’round the distant bend.
We take pride in our possessions which are mostly old and few,
And we plan while we are workin’ how we’ll start our life anew,
But plans and cheques are slaughtered when we hit the nearest pub,
Then it’s back out bush to work and plan and rough it in the scrub,
Oh, we are ringers, fencers, shearers, we are drovers on the track,
We are miners and road builders op’ning up the great outback,
Hard drinkers and hard workers and we give but never lend,
And we wander ‘cos we know our goal lies ’round the distant bend.
Yes we wander ‘cos we know our goal lies ’round the distant bend.

A lot of the lyrics in this song are based along the style of life I have lived over many years
and probably will continue to live

This Captures the essence of the Bushman and the hard work they did and do.. and one should remember the blood sweat and tears that went into those ‘Good Old Days’ so we can have the days we have today.. Loved watching the Video Emu, it showed us a little of Aussie history in the making.. Many thanks for sharing.. Take care and Have a beautiful Week.. Sue

Hi Sue , the old days are gone girl , blokes like Slim carried the name of Australia for years
Shit Sue I remember Jimmy Sharman and his touring boxing troupe , Sharman always had a bloke out front beating on a big base drum, used to travel with the outback carnivals
Worked a bit meself on the carnivals and we were called Carnies , hit the towns and always sent a gee up man ahead
to set up a boxing round with the locals , we were a great attraction till after a day or two the grog set in and then the fights would start
We moved on and our Gee up man went ahead and stirred the next town up for a boxing comp
      Never a boring life
      Cheers girl

I really enjoyed this, Ian, and I watcged another video about this Australian guy living in the bush with his Swiss wife Barbara … reminds me a bit of life on the prairies here in Alberta as well. Love the lifestyle, ad I’m so glad there’s still people like that around. Thanks for sharing that, Ian, be well. Love always, cat.

Hi Cat , we got a lot of people living like that here in Australia as the country is huge and very sparse in places
If I hadn’t got married for the third time I would have headed bush and gone to ground as I was used to in my army days.
Hope you are okay girl and sending you a big hug
