Cabo De Hornos

On our adventures last year to Valparaiso north Chile, Ana and I took a Harbour tour of this old world important port, Valparaiso was a major shipping port in the middle to late 1800’s before the Suez Canal was constructed. Today the Harbour is still alive with shipping arriving and departing to all corners of the Globe, container ships stand off shore waiting unloading, along the shoreline are numerous fishing vessels and Tourist vessels. I share with you some pictures of vessels that dot the shoreline; their colours are as flamboyant as is Valparaiso. The first picture depicts the vessel Cabo de Hornos. This Ship is a scientific research ship used by the Chilean Navy. The R/V Cabo DE Hornos is an advanced and versatile oceanographic and fisheries research vessel owned by the Chilean Navy. She was constructed as a replacement to Vidal Gormaz, which was decommissioned from service in August 2010. The construction was carried out at Asmar Talcahuano shipyard in Talcahuano, Chile, from 2009 to 2013, and delivery was made in April 2013. Cabo DE Hornos is capable of carrying out primary duties including fishery research operations, acoustic research operations, environmental research operations and seabed mapping globally. Built for oceanographic research. The ship is 74.1 meters long, 19.14 meters wide, and a gross tonnage of 3068. The ship can carry a complement of 68 people and cruise at 14.6 knots (27.0 km/h; 16.8 mph) She was designed by the Norwegian ship designer Skipsteknisk, designated as ST-367. Cabo DE Hornos ship began construction in November 2008. The ship was scheduled for launch on 27 February 2010. She was beached by the tsunami which followed the 2010 Chile earthquake early in the morning of the same day, before the launch was scheduled to occur. Following a complicated and involved salvage operation, she was launched in January 2011. Repairs were made in the shipyard of her construction and the ship was finally delivered to the Navy of Chile in April 2013.More information on the research Ship can be found here.
